Woods Resort hosts reunions and more in the eastern panhandle

Michelle and Karl Teel

The Woods golf courses have beautiful mountain views, well-kept greens, and scenic — yet challenging — water hazards.

Few things capture the human spirit like a reunion. People are getting together because they are filled with warm memories of the group, whether it consists of friends or family.

What are the key ingredients for a great reunion location?

Certainly, geography plays a role. It can be near an original location such as a school for a class reunion, or a centrally located venue accessible for people coming from many directions.

You also need amenities: places for people to stay, activities to cover a span of interests, and a place for people to eat together. The Woods, located in Hedgesville, W.Va., has it all and has been hosting reunions for more than 35 years.

Accommodations to choose from

Choose among a variety of accommodations designed to fit every budget and need. There are six four-bedroom accommodations, and the “Meadow Cottage” option sleeps up to eight people each. Each Meadow Cottage has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a large great room with fireplace, and a kitchen.

The Pinecrest Cottages each have one bedroom, a kitchenette, a fireplace, a deck and a whirlpool bath. There are also private villas with two to four bedrooms, plus kitchens and family rooms. All have free Wi-Fi, too.

When you have housing you can share, it’s much more budget-friendly.

Amenities to enjoy

No matter how diverse your group’s interests are, there always will be something fun to do for everyone. The Woods has two golf courses, the 18-hole Mountainview championship course and the 18-hole Stony Lick mid-length course.

The Woods’ year-round facilities include the superb Sleepy Creek spa, where you can get massages, skin care treatments, manicures, and pedicures.

Groups also enjoy swimming in the heated indoor or outdoor pools, playing tennis or racquetball, working out in the gym, hiking on 75 miles of trails, fishing in the 205-acre lake, or playing softball, volleyball, or pickleball.

There’s even a new open pavilion. Reunion groups can enjoy catered meals poolside or at the pavilion during the warmer months, and can organize golf tournaments and other activities. With advance notice, the staff can help arrange many activities designed to entertain children and adults of all ages, including clowns, face painting, magic shows, arts and crafts, disc jockeys, sports activities, and golf lessons.

The Woods is located about two hours from either Baltimore or Washington, D.C., not far from Berkeley Springs, Martinsburg, and other great attractions.
