Home Tours offer look into historic gems

Among the holiday treats in the Mid-Atlantic are the many tours of homes, churches, and other locations decorated for the season. Visitors get to go inside historic homes, modern architectural gems, and many locations not usually open to the public. Most of the tours are local fundraisers as well as holiday attractions.

Here is a sampling of this year’s tours:

Virginia

The Virginia Tourism Corp. has a list of upcoming home tours in Virginia. One of the oldest is the Candlelight Tour in Fredericksburg .

Among the holiday home tours In Maryland is Christmas in St. Michaels, which includes a whole weekend of activities in the charming Eastern Shore town. Elsewhere in Maryland, the tour in Frederick is supplemented by similar tours of houses of worship and museums.

The city of Westminster has been showcasing it’s historic homes since 1996. At the top of Chesapeake Bay, there are tours in Havre de Grace and the town of Port Deposit.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s holiday home tours stretch from Philadelphia west to Chadds Ford, Kennett Square, and West Chester.

Strasburg is famous for its Amish Country scenic Railroad and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, but also hosts a home tour. The Inns of Gettysburg host a special tour of their historic properties. More to the west are tours in historic Bellfonte and in Indiana, the hometown of actor Jimmy Stewart and acknowledged Christmas Tree Capital of the World.

Delaware

In Delaware, the 52nd Christmas in Odessa includes a tour, but lots of other activities for the holiday season.
