Each week, Recreation News takes you to a new waterfall in the Mid-Atlantic. This week, see the Great Falls in Maryland.
Location: On the Virginia/Maryland border
Height: 76 feet
The Great Falls are actually a series of cascades and rapids on a two-thirds of a mile stretch of the Potomac. The river drops about 76 feet over this distance. None of the individual falls exceeds a 20 foot drop.
How to get there:
The Maryland side of Great Falls is part of the C&O Canal National Historical Park. The street address for the Maryland side is: 11710 MacArthur Blvd., Potomac MD 20854 See a map here.
While you’re there:
A walk along the Potomac or through the woods on one of the park’s trails offers a glimpse into the natural scenery there.
Most of the park’s 800 acres are forested. Throughout the year, over 150 different species of birds can be seen at Great Falls Park.
