The view from the top of the hill is terrific, but the real treat is the Hotel Hershey, perched on that hill overlooking Hersheypark and the town. It has 276 rooms, including 48 cottages, and has a 4 Diamond Award from Triple A.
As a guest you’ll find plenty to do. There’s an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, basketball, shuffleboard, tennis, an 18-hole putting course, free shuttle to the park, Zoo America and Chocolate World, four dining options, free parking, formal gardens in the back of the hotel and the famous Hershey Rose Garden nearby. This is 23 acres holds 11 themed gardens that provide a beautiful summer show of roses.
The main dining room at the hotel is called the Circular, apropos of its shape. The food is wonderful and the menu changes seasonally, but the views of the formal gardens are a great part of the experience. The hotel provides 23-hour room service during the summer.
One popular attraction is the Hershey Spa. Located in the hotel it offers many treatments, including some featuring chocolate components. One guest who just experienced a chocolate treatment told me, “There is nothing like it. I didn’t want it to end. Who knew you could do that with chocolate.”
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that there are bowls of the famous Hershey Kisses scattered throughout the spa.
The hotel was completed in 1933 in the midst of the Great Depression. Milton Hershey, who had the hotel designed after one he saw in Europe, decided to hire workers during these years and not stop work on the project. Therefore, the town did not suffer as much as others during those tough economic years. If you look at history, you learn how much Milton Hershey meant to this town. To this day, the Milton Hershey School does not charge any of its 2,000 students.
Hersheypark, about a mile away, is open daily after Memorial Day. If you’re staying in the hotel or Hershey Lodge, there is a park discount. The park has a wide range of rides and roller-coasters, but during really hot summer days, the Water Park is the place to cool off.
Hershey is an ideal location for an overnight getaway or daytrip. You can reach the hotel by calling 717-533-2171 or at hersheypa.com.
One last thing. Milton Hershey had tickets for the maiden voyage of the Titanic, but changed his plans at the last minute. Good move. You can make a good move by visiting Hershey this summer.
