The mountains of the Mid-Atlantic are dotted with cabins that are great retreats in the winter and spring. Choose your activity level, from skiing to cuddling before a fire, and you’ll find a cabin to suit your needs. Choose the amenities you want, from full kitchen and hot tub to rustic, and there’s a cabin experience waiting for you.
Perhaps nowhere in the Mid-Atlantic are there more cabin choices than in West Virginia. From state park offerings to private owner rentals to cabin “resorts,” the Mountain State has cabins for every taste. The state offers a regional rental cabin directory at wvweekends.com.
In the Eastern Panhandle, not far from Martinsburg, The Woods Resort offers cabins in addition to its other accommodations. Through March 31, rates start at $119 for a cabin with a fireplace. The resort includes the Sleepy Creek Spa, golf, indoor pool, and an indoor sports center. There are various stay-and-play packages as well.
A bit to the south, near Seneca Rocks and the Dolly Sods Natural Area, LTD Vacations rents cabins that are pet-friendly. The four cabins sleep five to 12 people and feature hot tubs, gas fireplaces, and full kitchens. There are marked hiking trails and outdoor campfire pits.
Take a ride on the Potomac Eagle scenic railroad, head out for some downhill or cross-country skiing, or take in one of the local caverns. In warmer weather, take a horseback ride to the top of Seneca Rocks for a unique view. Mountain bikers have access to the trails at Mountain Lake Retreat and anglers can enjoy two stocked ponds on the property in addition to numerous nearby streams.
Near the popular New River Gorge in Hico, Country Road Cabins is a collection of one- to four-bedroom log cabins that are available year-round and include private hot tubs, fireplaces, and full kitchens. There are a variety of packages, including a romance package that can include champagne, breakfast, and a steak dinner or other amenities like massages. Winter specials provide a $100 per night savings on and two- or three-bedroom cabin.
Country Roads also offers activity packages for zip lining, whitewater rafting, and other sports in season. Pet-friendly cabins are available.
Also in Hico, Hemlock Haven offers five cabins on its 28 acres; four sleeping up to eight guests and one accommodating up to 12. All the cabins are dog-friendly with a private fenced yard and include luxury amenities with fireplaces, hot tubs, and fully equipped kitchens. Each cabin also has an outdoor fire pit.
Working with local outfitters, the Hemlock Haven staff will assist in arranging whitewater rafting, horseback riding, ATV rides, golf, and fishing. There are walking trails on the property and plenty of hiking in nearby state parks and the national recreation area. A couple’s special runs through April 2 that includes chocolates and champagne. Value season runs through May 18.

The resort in Lansing offers all the standards for Southern West Virginia, including the popular rafting trips and packages tailored for water, zip lining, and multi-sport activities, as well as all-inclusive packages.
Lodging choices range from the most basic cabin to deluxe cabins with hot tubs and all the amenities. In between are affordable mountain cabins with kitchens.
Ace Adventure Resort in Lansing also attracts the year-round sports buff and its zip line adventure park lures winter visitors. Twelve cabins range from deluxe lodgings for groups or families sleeping four to 10 people to rustic bunkhouse options. The deluxe cabins feature hot tubs, full kitchens, and campfire areas.
